History of FJMC & Sir Ganga Ram Hospital

Fatima Jinnah Medical College/Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is a premier medical institution situated in the heart of Lahore city, close to its main artery Shahra-i-Quaid-i-Azam and Punjab Assembly. It was with purpose to built facilities to teach & train female doctors & also to impart instructions to the postgraduate students & simultaneously provides medical & healthcare facilities to the citizens of Lahore in the catchments area.

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has a long history. It was established in 1921 in the walled city of Lahore by a philanthropist Sir Ganga Ram, who donated a piece of land for this noble cause. The hospital was shifted to its present location in 1943 to cope with growing demands of medical for fast growing population of the city

In 1946 Sir Ganga Ram started a medical college by the name of Balak Ram medical college named after his son. After 1947 the college which, was in its infancy was closed & its premises abandoned.
A year after the birth of our country, when the need for immediate establishment of an institution to train women in the medical profession was recognized At that time renowned medical professional Professor Shujat Ai, with the help of other pr colleagues took the initiative of obtaining the approval of the Father of the Nation Quai-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah & giving it the name of his sister Miss Fatima Jinnah., Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah gave his blessings and approved the name of his sister. Fatima Jinnah Medical College was formally inaugurated on March 31st in 1949.

Fatima Jinnah Medical College proudly admitted its first batch of 39 students in October, 1948. Since then it has been training women from not only all over Pakistan but also from the entire Muslim world, as well as all western nations. The first principal of the college was Professor Shujaat Ali.

The faculty of FJMC is both male and female, all being highly-qualified in their respective fields. The college has well-equipped laboratories, an air-conditioned dissection hall, lecture theatres with audio-visual equipment, anatomy and pathology museums, clinical academic rooms, a well-stocked library with computers and an auditorium.

Today Fatima Jinnah Medical College is one of the best medical institutions in the Sub-continent imparting a quality & standard education which is very well recognized around the globe.

Numerous doctors & specialists who are graduates of this college are serving worldwide & bring credible recognition to their Alma Matar.

Sir has a sanctioned strength of 534 beds though the average number of admissions touches 700. The hospital mostly caters to the health needs of poor and underprivileged class. The college and the hospital is the result of consistent & strenuous efforts exerted by all those associated with them during the past decades. A lot of transformations have occurred over decades as new block have been added and the infrastructure has expanded. Presently the campus is spread over the area of 314 Kanals but is further expanding as in 2005 the old emergency block was torn down along with the male doctor’s hostel and now is being replaced with a state of the art emergency and trauma center. This four storey building, once completed will have a parking in the basement and emergency center, trauma center & ICU in the building above.

Construction of FJMC Block: Addition to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, The Chief Executive, Principal, Faculty members of FJMC, and the members of the Committee of the Resolution of the New Millennium are pleased to announce the campaign to construct a new 400 bed Fatima Jinnah Block for Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on self help basis & with the help of professional colleagues, philanthropists, government agencies, and NGOs.
